A client of mine told me she’d had her rescue dog for a few years - but only has posed iphone selfies of her with him. That broke my heart.
See, I’ve lived a lot of different lives within my one short life, and have overcome a lot of things (including Crohn’s disease and a tumultuous journey to sobriety (my sober "birthday" is January 17th, 2011)! For years, I took photographs of people that were acceptable, likeable. Work I was proud of, for sure. But something was missing. I always felt I’d like to be remembered as wild, free, and a bit untamed - as opposed to the fear- and imposter-driven person I sometimes saw when I looked in the mirror. But my work felt polished, like it fit neatly into the same box that was expected of me.
Then Wilder, my shy and anxious introvert rescue pup, came into my life.
As an anxious dog, he shuts down quite a bit in stressful situations - but seeing him come alive up in the mountains on the trails with his friends, or when his guard is down and he’s in full love mode… that struck something in me and showed me the massive gap between how we are when we're scared and how we are when we're free. I realized I wanted to bring more of those honest moments into the world, because they are more precious than any perfectly posed image could ever be. So a few years ago, I decided to make the shift and honor something more honest in my work: animals - and their people - returning to their nature. Images that feel tangible in their truth; where you can feel the memory with all your senses because the moment is so real.
At its core, my work is about two things: remembering what's real, and capturing it while we can. I don't want perfect, posed portraits. I want you looking back at photos of your dog, your cat, your partner, your whole crew, and feeling the actual love - not the staged and posed version we often see on social media.
